Gregory Haralambous
Working under the professional moniker, Afrikei Photography, South African, emerging photographer, Gregory Haralambous is truly beginning to make a name for himself.
At the tender age of 18, "Greg" (as he refers to himself) already has quite an eye for capturing beauty.
"I can't remember a time when I didn't take my camera out with me; it has become a daily necessity. I've always loved the concept of photography. I never used to get out much before, but photography has given me the ambition to go out and explore everything around us. It has really opened my eyes to the world as it is and its natural beauty, even if it means seeing through a lens."
Taken at Kalk Bay Harbour (a fishing village and suburb of Cape Town, on the coast of False Bay), "Sunrise at the Harbour" is one of my favorite captures. The peacefulness of the water, as the rising sun shimmers on its surface, alludes to a sense of hope and urges you forward. This juxtaposition of both wanting to linger and drink in the beauty of the moment, while simultaneously being lured into the promise of the unknown is a the mark of a photographer with maturity. Perhaps, though, it additionally has something to do with his view of the arts as being a bridge to understanding one another.
"You don't just take a picture, you capture the moment, suspended within time. These moments express my perception, my emotions, and this creates a door into how I see beauty. This is true for not only me, but every other photographer who too creates these doors, which allow us to essentially see through each others' eyes."
No matter what the thought process is, he definitely has an eye for meaningful photography. Although he is quite capable of producing mature pieces, he still brings a sense of wonder and youthfulness to his work. He has been known to experiment with his photography by quite literally putting his self into the image, or by using matches to frame a focal point, and even by utilizing Light Painting (get some steel wool, a whisp, string, use a long shutter speed and then light it up).
There's no doubt, that Haralambous will continue to cultivate and develop his work. He echoed the same thought that his good friend and co-photographer, Luka Christian shared...
"With every capture I feel as if I grow, and though my photography style may change over time, my main purpose will not. And that is to appreciate what we are and everything around us."
With a mindset like that, he is sure to produce images that are worthy of admiration and appreciation.
It is our hope that you would help us to be the catalyst that would introduce Gregory to the photography world at large. Like, Share, Pin and tell others.
