Is the idea of having segregation between insider and outsider art a good one?
It’s understandable that someone who has studied art and maybe even has a degree as proof, most likely has a leg up on someone who may have never gotten the opportunity to do the same. They know all of the proper terminology, have an understanding of technique, what works best to achieve a desired outcome and have had professors or maybe even masters mentor them. Does this mean, though, that they are truly better artists than those who may not have had the same privileges?
What if everyone’s artwork was displayed in the same museums or galleries and afforded the same publicity, but all of the signatures were covered, so that you couldn’t buy based on a name, or a brand?
Whose work would be purchased? Would it be equal? Would the Insiders still make more money, or would the art world be completely turned upside down when they realized their choices turned out to be “low” culture? Although we will likely never have an answer to that question, it’s an intriguing query to ponder.
